Dramatic Light
This collection of oil paintings focuses on dramatic light, shadow and reflection and uses these phenomena as subject matter and compositional devices. A technique derived from Paul Klee’s “Twittering Machine” (which uses printing in conjunction with oil paint) is employed in these paintings, but as a base layer acrylic print. The texture of the print lends itself to the elusive quality of shadows. An interest in abstraction, color and texture, as well as the extent to which the print is obscured or revealed, is used to describe a series of views that the artist observed in daily life.

These dramatic shadows cast over a sunny table with familiar objects created a dynamic composition. The cool purple shadows contrast with the warm orange tones and there is an interplay between opaque paint and thinly glazed shadow areas.

This painting focuses on dramatic fields of light and complex shadows filtering through colored glass jars. The print layer is largely left exposed, which is contrasted with thick layers of paint along the bottom edge, in the window and in the white blocks of cast light in the foreground.

This abstract composition came about from a shadow that was cast on paper by an adjacent vase of flowers. The arrangement is inherently abstract.

This painting captures interestingly shaped blocks of sunlight streaming through a large window behind a piano. It is both realistic and abstract. The print technique lends itself to expressing the texture in the wood flooring.

This painting of dramatic light through an outdoor pergola makes use of an acrylic print over a toned background. Paint is used strategically in order to allow the texture and some of the line work of the print to play an integral role in the overall image.

This image came about when dramatic cast shadows from flowers fell across a temporary work area that had been set up on a dining room table. The cut paper and the abstract shadow shapes make for an interesting and unplanned “collage”.

This painting revisits a theme but departs from realism and is largely abstract. It also contrasts round and square shapes, opaque paint and unadorned printed areas, and cool and warm colors.
